Metaverse
Metaverse… a concept of an online 3D virtual space that connects users in their daily lives. Metaverse connects multiple platforms, similar to internet containing multiple websites but in a single browser.
Concept was developed in a Sci-fi novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Metaverse is supported by an augmented reality, with each user represented as a character or an avatar.
An example of a metaverse will be a meeting conducted with an Oculus VR headset, in a virtual office. Once done with work, the people can relax in a blockchain-based game and this is where they can manage crypto portfolio and finances inside the metaverse.
Some close example or features of metaverse are games like Second Life and Fortnite and Gather.town, a work socialization tool. These games and platform bring multiple elements of daily lives into the online world. Although they are not metaverse, they are almost similar.
Not only metaverse supports gaming or social media, it combines economies, digital identity, decentralised governance as well as other applications. Even now, user creation and ownership of valuable items and currencies help develop a single, united metaverse. All these features provides blockchain the potential to power this future technology.
Are there any close relations between video games and the metaverse?
The answer is yes because video games represents visuals and graphics with much more in depth and detail, it provides a 3D virtual reality experience that resembles what metaverse looks like. However, it is not all about the 3D experience. Video games also offer services and features that relates to other aspects of the human lives, like Roblox, where they host virtual events — concerts and meetups. Roblox players don’t just play games, they use it for other activities and relate it with their lives inside this “cyberspace”. Another example, Fortnite, 12.3 million players took part in Travis Scott’s virtual in game music tour.
